Newfound Gap Overlook in the Great Smoky Mountains on the border of Tennessee & North Carolina

This road had been washed out by heavy rainfall a couple months before our trip and was re-opened to traffic only two weeks before our trip.

We had lunch with the Colonel in Cherokee NC

Hwy 28 was both interesting and challenging

Bridal Veil Falls -- the original highway went under the falls but was closed due to the danger of rock slides.
Normally blocked to traffic we took the opportunity to drive under the falls for a group photo.

He was the only one with enough climbing skills to scale the mountain.
The rest of us were the only ones with enough age to realize
that we couldn't climb the mountain.

Alcoa, TN --- getting ready to drive to the Devil's Triangle

Somewhere on the Devil's Triangle.
Our GPS units ceased to function, we had no cell phone coverage, and our walkie-talkies barely worked
Robert & TomTom thought they heard banjos playing in the woods nearby.
The roads were paved but narrow,
the drop off from the asphalt was almost always in excess of 12",
and we were constantly meeting coal trucks on the curves.
The switchbacks and elevation changes caused us to gear down to first several times.
